Spring Crappie Fishing
By Jake Smith
For many fishermen, the crappie is one of the most fun fish to catch. The crappie is a member of the sunfish family and is a very popular game fish. It is known to be one of the best tasting freshwater fish in North America, with its only rivals being the walleye and perch. Crappie can be caught year round. They use different parts of the lake, river or reservoir depending on the season. The most popular time of the year for crappie fishing is during the spring when they move in shallow in large numbers to spawn. Crappie move into the shallows as the water temperatures reach into the low 50's. The bite really turns on and lasts for 2-4 weeks as temperatures reach into the high 50's and low 60's. The best method for catching crappie in spring is to fish shallow cover such as downed trees and edges of weed beds in 1-4 feet of water. Use a 1/32 to 1/8 oz jig head tipped with a minnow below a slip float. Crappie tend to "feed up" so make sure that the bait is not set too far below the float. The crappie will move under the bait and hit it from the bottom or side. There are times when they hit hard, but there are also times in which they will softly take the bait. When they are hitting soft and easy, the only indication may be that the float will rise slightly or lie flat, don't hesitate to set the hook when this happens. You will definitely catch more fish if you do this. If you have never fished for crappie, your missing out on a lot of fun. So grab your gear and take a kid crappie fishing this spring. You'll be glad you did. |
